Industrial Globe Valve: Engineering Specifications and Procurement Guide

Valtone industrial globe valves are engineered for precise flow throttling and reliable shut-off in high-pressure piping systems. Built with an outside screw and yoke (OS&Y) rising stem design, these valves isolate line media from the stem threads to prevent corrosion and galling. Configured for severe service demands, our forged and cast bodies comply with ASME B16.34 and API standards, delivering tight shut-off and minimal pressure drop across hydrocarbon processing, power generation, and industrial steam networks.

Working Principle

Operation relies on linear stem travel moving a plug-type disc perpendicular to the seat ring.

Rotating the handwheel lowers or raises the stem, decreasing or increasing the annular flow area between the plug and the seat. This linear displacement permits accurate flow regulation. The fluid changes direction inside the body, creating higher flow resistance compared to gate valves, which makes it ideal for intentional pressure reduction and throttling duties.

Performance / Selection Considerations

Flow Direction:

Install strictly according to the flow arrow cast on the body (typically under-seat entry) to ensure proper disc seating and prevent water hammer.

Cv Values:

Calculate required flow coefficients to avoid oversized selection, which accelerates seat erosion at low opening percentages.

Cavitation Risk:

Evaluate pressure drop ratios (delta P / P1) for liquid applications to prevent flashing and downstream pipe damage.

FAQ

Q: What is the difference between a globe valve and a gate valve in piping design?

A: Gate valves are strictly designed for on/off isolation with minimal pressure drop in the fully open position. Globe valves feature a plug disc and tortuous flow path engineered specifically for flow regulation and frequent throttling operations.

Q: Why must globe valves be installed in a specific flow direction?

A: Standard globe valves use under-seat flow entry to keep fluid pressure acting beneath the disc, making it easier to open the valve and protecting the packing box from line pressure when closed. Reversing flow direction can cause stem vibration, accelerated seat wear, and difficulties in manual operation.

Q: How does Valtone prevent stem leakage in high-pressure services?

A: Valtone applies a multi-ring flexible graphite packing arrangement coupled with a precision-ground stem (surface finish <0.4 um) and back-seat design. Live-loaded spring washers can be added to maintain constant gland packing compression through thermal cycles.

Q: What flange facing options are available for ASME Class 600 and above?

A: For Class 600 and higher ratings, we supply Raised Face (RF) with serrated spiral finishes and Ring-Type Joint (RTJ) grooves machined per ASME B16.5 and B16.47 to ensure metal-to-metal sealing under high line pressure.

Q: Can Valtone globe valves be automated with electric or pneumatic actuators?

A: Yes. All valves are manufactured with an integrated top flange compliant with ISO 5211 standards, allowing direct mounting of pneumatic piston actuators, spring-return units, or multi-turn electric actuators without custom brackets.

Q: What documentation is provided with each shipment?

A: Each shipment includes EN 10204 3.1 material test certificates, hydrostatic test reports, PMI inspection logs, NDT examination records, and a comprehensive installation and maintenance manual tailored to the specific bill of materials.
